Here Murillo created a poignant rendering of Our Lady of Sorrows, who mourns her dead son. The motif is linked to the theme of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, which inspired several key works in sacred art that is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The artist’s colour palette is diaphanous and sublimely tender, albeit never too soft. The lifelike expression inspires empathy, rather than melancholy or pathetic sentiment. The malleable chiaroscuro harmonises with the shelving hands and face.
