Girolamo Romano, called Il Romanino, was an Italian Renaissance painter from Brescia. Nothing is known about his training. The earliest known painting by him is dated 1510. His style and the vivid colours of his paintings correspond to Venetian art around 1500. Romanino's altarpieces were to be found, for instance, in churches in Brescia, Padua, Modena and Trieste. His main work is the fresco decoration of the Castello del Buonconsiglio, the residence of the Prince-Bishop of Trento. From 1531 onwards, he created an iconographic programme in the Castello that combined allegories, mythological and ancient episodes, biblical scenes and female nudes. More than 120 works and groups of works by Romanino have survived, proving him to be one of the busiest artists of the first half of the 16th century in northern Italy.
