Gustav Carl Ludwig Richter was a German painter and lithographer who specialised mainly in genre scenes and portraits. He studied in Berlin, Paris and Rome. In 1860, he was appointed a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 1873, Richter spent the summer at the summer residence of the tsars in the Crimea, where he painted portraits of the tsar's family. On journeys through North Africa he produced numerous drawings. He painted his main lithographic work Building of the Pyramids / Bau der ägyptischen Pyramiden (Building the Egyptian Pyramids) in 1872.
