Alfonso Hollaender was a German-Italian painter and engraver, who studied in Berlin. In the early 1870s, he moved to Florence, where he quickly made friends with fellow painters, especially the Macchiaioli, who were inspired by French Impressionism. Hollaender made a name for himself with Impressionist landscapes, vedute and especially church interiors, but he also painted portraits and still lifes. Hollaender also worked as an illustrator. In 1888, he was appointed honorary member of the Accademia del Disegno in Florence. Alfonso Hollaender left about fifty of his works to the city of Florence.
