Born in Abruzzo and trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples, Filippo Palizzi became one of the most important Italian artists of the 19th century. After visiting his brother who lived in France, he became acquainted with the painting of the Barbizon school, which strongly influenced his work. His work mainly comprises landscapes, interiors and genre scenes. As a committed advocate for innovation in academic education, he was one of the co-founders of the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti and the Museo Artistico Industriale in Naples in 1861. Palizzi was awarded the highest Italian and Habsburg orders of honour for his commitment.
