Giovanni Fattori from Livorno studied painting first in his home town, then at the Accademia di Belli Arti in Florence. He was one of the founding members of the artist group Macchiaioli. Like the French Impressionists, the group turned away from the conventions of academic painting and devoted itself to realistic plein air painting. Fattori’s work includes landscapes and rural scenes as well as realistic depictions of battles.
