The Eastman Kodak Company was founded in Rochester, New York, in 1882. Kodak became very successful selling cameras that anybody with an interest in photography could afford. Thanks to Kodak’s affordable cameras, Steichen could pursue photography as a hobby at a young age, which eventually led to him being a world-famous photographer. In 1931, Steichen was hired by the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson Co. to photograph a campaign for Kodak. Instead of using professional models, Steichen had everyday people look at snapshots and captured their reactions.
