The artist Leonard Wells Volk made the life mask of Abraham Lincoln’s beardless face in 1860 during his first presidential campaign. Edward Steichen studied the bronze mask for months before he took this photograph. Decades after he took the photograph, in 1961, Steichen still considered The Life Mask Of Abraham Lincoln to be his “most profound photograph”.
