Greta Garbo (1905-1990) was one of the most popular movie stars of the 1920s and 1930s. Edward Steichen visited her on the set of A Woman of Affairs in Hollywood in 1928. Steichen had five minutes to photograph Greta Garbo. The picture in the collection of the MNAHA was taken when the director of the film came in to call her back to work. Steichen describes the scene in his autobiography: “[...] he said 'Greta, I've given you ten minutes instead of five. We have to go to work.' As a reply, she gave him a scowl.” Edward Steichen captured that exact moment.
