Mary Pickford (1893-1979) was an actress, who made her motion picture debut in 1913. Only one year later, she founded her own production company. In 1916, Pickford signed a contract with Paramount Pictures, which granted her full control over the production of the films she starred in and made her the best paid actress in Hollywood. In 1933, after her 194th film, she retired from acting. Edward Steichen photographed Mary Pickford for the September 1928 issue of Vanity Fair.
