Thomas Hitchcock Jr. (1900-1944) is considered one of the greatest polo players of all time. F. Scott Fitzgerald based two characters in his novels on Thomas Hitchcock Jr.: Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby (1925) and Tommy Barban in Tender Is The Night (1934). Edward Steichen photographed Thomas Hitchcock Jr. for Vanity Fair on the grounds of the Meadowbrook Polo Club, the oldest polo club in the United States.
