Dana Steichen

Print: after 1939 - before 1971Gelatin silver print toned in palladium ((marouflé sur carton)) ; (tonnifié)H x L : 25.2 x 20.3 cm

Dana Desboro Glover was Edward Steichen’s second wife. They met in 1921 when Dana was 27 years old and married in 1923. This portrait of Steichen’s wife is not a snapshot. He carefully staged his wife Dana. Her face appears bright in this otherwise dark picture. Dana is apparently standing in a garden, with branches of a tree framing her head. It is therefore likely that Steichen worked with natural light that perfectly accentuated Dana’s face, creating a contrast to her black hair and the monochrome, undefined background.
