Eleonora Duse (1858-1924) was an Italian stage actress. Her expressive and naturalistic acting made her one of the most famous actresses of her time. Steichen photographed Eleonora Duse in January 1903 in New York. Steichen later said that Eleonora Duse was the most natural subject he ever photographed.
