Mary Steichen
Print: probably 1910 - 1929H x L : 25.2 x 20 cm
Mary Steichen (1904-1998) was the elder of Steichen’s two daughters with his first wife, Clara. We do not know when this photo was taken exactly, but Mary seems to be about twelve or thirteen years old. After her parents divorced, Mary stayed with her father in the U.S.A while her mother took her sister Kate back to their house in France. Mary met her very busy father only during the summer holidays and stayed with family friends throughout the year. It is likely that the photo was taken on one of the rare occasions that Mary and Edward Steichen met in those days. Mary is shown as half-figure, facing the camera with a wide smile.
