In 1938, having just closed his New York studio, Edward Steichen travelled to Mexico with his wife Dana. They travelled the country for two months, visiting Pátzcuaro, Tehuantepec, Yucatan and other destinations. Using a small 35 mm camera with colour film, Steichen took numerous photographs in Mexico, documenting the everyday life in the streets. The pictures do not seem staged. We can assume that most of these photographs were taken spontaneously, without preparation, and most likely without the subjects’ knowledge.
