Vallée de la Pétrusse

1919Watercolour on paperH x L : 15 x 23.4 cm

The vivid green of the bushes and trees frames the scenery. The Petruss valley is bathed in a warm blueish-purple hue, emphasised with organically placed yellow-green splodges, creating a complementary contrast. Luxembourg City on top of the Passerelle (Al Bréck) forms the backdrop, painted in more subtle light colours. Colours and nature are at the centre of this picturesque landscape, a testimony to Sosthène Weis’s process of en plein air painting. Indeed, the spontaneous pencil lines and vibrant use of colour make this work a prime example of Weis’ artistic practice.
