The Portrait Society | Rembrandt
1996 - 1997 | 4th quarter 20th centuryCharcoal and acrylic on canvasH x L : 50 x 40 cm
Rembrandt was one of the most important and influential artists of the Baroque. As a painter, etcher and draughtsman, he focused on religious and mythological themes, landscapes and portraits. Already during his lifetime, his paintings reached the whole of Europe by means of prints and copies. In the course of his life, Rembrandt produced about eighty self-portraits (paintings, drawings, etchings). This self-portrait, which is still in the Uffizi today, was the model for Roland Schauls' painting. Cardinal Leopoldo de' Medici purchased it and displayed it in his flat in Palazzo Pitti. This information results from an inventory drawn up after the cardinal's death in 1675. The self-portrait has been in the possession of the Uffizi since 1704.
