Construction work at a farm in Vichten - an der Lae led to the discovery of a sumptuous Gallo-Roman villa. In the spring of 1995, rescue excavations of a tiny section of this luxury residence uncovered a mosaic, an underground aqueduct and wall paintings – all in an outstanding state of conservation.
Important wall paintings were brought to light in situ in a corridor, two rooms and a gallery of the villa. In corridor no. 4 – 1.50 m wide and approximately 10 m long – the painted render was partially still in place. The study and reassembly of the fragments – a gigantic puzzle – allowed archaeologists to calculate an original floor-to-ceiling height of the corridor of 4.30 m.
These murals testify not only to the greatly experienced craftsmanship of the artisans, but also to the owners’ love and concern for scholarly culture.
