In March 1853, after the fortuitous discovery of a cremation necropolis during wood clearing work near the village of Hellange, the forest workers contacted the local priest, P. Kneip, a member of the conservation society. He took in the objects and documented the circumstances of their discovery in a detailed report.
Hellange burial A, a rectangle measuring 1.50 m by 0.75 m and roughly sixty centimetres deep, contained a rather small number of exclusive grave goods: glass vessels, a stone urn with a circular base, and a splendid brass visor mounted on an iron helmet. The visor was in an exceptional state of conservation when found. However, only a few tiny fragments of the iron helmet remained, and they have since been lost.
The androcephalic visor is richly decorated: the forehead is girded by a historiated band showing three embossed medallions, the central one separated from the others by a rosette. The lower edge of the band is lined by a twisted ribbon. The almond-shaped eyes and the parted lips are pierced, the eyelashes and eyebrows highlighted by raised mouldings.
The helmet to which this visor was attached undoubtedly belonged to an elite horseman who had been awarded three phalerae as military decorations. The deceased buried at Hellange clearly wished to be accompanied by these insignia of merit during his last voyage.
