This photograph shows Edward Steichen’s first wife Clara with their first daughter Mary, who was born in 1904. Edward Steichen took the photograph in the garden of Rosemary Cottage in Huntington, Long Island. In the summer of 1905, they were invited to stay with Roland and Mary MacFadden Conklin in their cottage. The wealthy art patrons had previously bought several of Steichen’s paintings and commissioned him to paint their portraits while the Steichens stayed with them.
