Baldassare Aloisi Galanini (or Galanino) was a painter from Bologna who was related to the Carracci family of painters on his mother's side. After having started philological studies, he soon transferred to the art academy that the Carracci had founded. One of his first known works are the frescoes in the Oratorio di San Colombo in Bologna, which Aloisi Galanini executed together with Guido Reni and Domenichino. His first independent work was an allegorical depiction for the tomb of Agostino Carracci (1602). Several more commissions followed in Bologna and the surrounding area. In 1607, Aloisi went to Rome, where he worked with Annibale Carracci and became a member of the Accademia di San Luca. In 1609, he accompanied Annibale Carracci on a brief trip to Naples shortly before Annibale's death. Aloisi returned there several times until 1613 to produce paintings commissioned by churches and the Viceroy of Naples. Back in Rome, Aloisi mainly painted portraits, including those of his fellow painters Lavinia Fontana and Sofonisba Anguissola.
