Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) is often referred to as a pioneer of modern dance. Her method was inspired by ancient Greek art and was composed of running, jumping, and skipping. Steichen accompanied Isadora and her students, the so-called “Isadorables”, to Athens in the summer of 1921. There, he took this shot of Isadora Duncan in a very simple pose, framed by the mighty walls of the Parthenon. The photo was published in Vanity Fair in August 1923.
