- Description:
- Fireback divided into 4 compartments depicting Justice, Infidelity, Fidelity and Injustice. The upper figures are naked, the two lower ones wear draped costumes. One of the women (Justice) is carrying a pair of scales; the other 3 are accompanied by dogs. The banners bear the following Dutch inscriptions (after Siebenaler): HET IS EEN SCHADE DAT TROWE IS UCHTER DAN EEN PLUM. (It's a pity that loyalty is lighter than a feather) ICH JAGE OM DIE WINDEN OFT ICH TROWE KONDEN VINDEN (I seek fidelity everywhere). TROWE IS DOET ONTROWE VERDT VERHAVEN (?) (Faithfulness is dead; unfaithfulness is hated). ONTROWE LOEPT OVERAL (Infidelity is everywhere). The four compartments of the plate are separated by a globe surmounted by a cross.
