- Description:
- Multicolored sampler decorated with embroidery on green linen. The reverse is made of gold-colored silk. The edge is decorated with an approximately one centimeter wide border, defined by an openwork chain stitch. The front with the green linen is covered with various embroideries on the right side. At the top left (on the right side) are initials in stem stitch: SK, probably Sisi Kauffmann. At the top right is an embroidery of the town of Esch in the same stitch. The year 1939 is dated at the top center for the centenary of Luxembourg's independence in satin stitch. In the middle of the right-hand side is a sun whose circumference was embroidered in satin stitch and which surrounds the center of the sun, which is embroidered in open squares showing the golden silk beneath. The sun rays are done in stem stitch. Below this is a row of three types of flowers: poppies, daisies (both with satin stitch and stem stitch) and violets, both in straight stitch and satin stitch. The flowers surround a date (1839), which was also executed in stem stitch. On the side with the golden silk are two small buttons made of mother-of-pearl (?) at some distance from each other. There are two botton loops on the opposite side to close the buttons and form a small pocket.
