- Description:
- The museum acquired this fascinating painting by Carl Glotz at this year’s edition of TEFAF Maastricht. In c. 1836, the Viennese artist depicted his atelier and living space in Florence. On closer inspection, a copy of Elizabeth Vigée Le Brun’s famous Self portrait (1790) and other works after Dürer and Reni, which he studied at the Uffizi Galleries, can be seen on the back wall of the studio, alongside several sketches. Both this remarkable Florentine workshop interior and its owner need to be researched further. It certainly offers an interesting (historical) glimpse into the artist’s practice and his interest in emulating examples from the past, with the painting of his female colleague occupying such a prominent place.
