AN AMERICAN AT PARC DRÄI EECHELEN
Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Franz II, Joseph
de Ferraris (1726-1814) produced a map series of the
Austrian Netherlands and the Principality of Liège at
the scale 1:11 520 between 1771 and 1777. In 1777/78, a
reduced version was published for the public, which is
on display at M3E]. But I‘m also crazy about a couple
of the models at Musée Dräi Eechelen. Particularly that
giant one of the whole city from 1867. It stops me in my
tracks every time I see it!
In what way has collaborating with the Museum
changed your view on the city?
It starts to put things more in context. Before,
everything just seemed cool, old and Europey to me. In
Luxembourg, unlike in America, recorded history goes
back so far and this country has changed hands so
many times, that it can be difficult to keep it all straight.
Dräi Eechelen is cool because inside the museum, you
can see maps and representations of things throughout
local history, and then go outside and see the actual
building or wall or tunnel (or whatever) that‘s being
referred to.
Thanks, Mike!
