MORE THAN A DIGITAL PROJECT
Highlighting its collection of Luxembourg coins
provides the Coin Cabinet with a fabulous opportunity
to study the heart of our numismatic collections that
represent an invaluable heritage in depth. This „new
generation“ cataloguing is part of a long tradition
of transmitting knowledge at the example of coin
collectors from previous centuries. Therefore, parallel
to the encoding, a research project is carried out about
one of the first catalogues of Luxembourg coins. The
historian Jules Vannérus (1870-1974) from Diekirch and
the Antwerp lawyer and collector Édouard Bernays
(1874-1940) published it in 1908 (Histoire numismatique
du comté puis duché de Luxembourg et de ses fiefs).
Bernays gave his collection to the Coin Cabinet of
Brussels and Vannérus to the Archives nationales de
Luxembourg. These major series complete adequately
the coins collection of the MNHA. A publication and an
exhibition will illustrate their works as well as explore
the new lights that digitized materials can offer to a
numismatic collection.
