RENC’ART - ARTWORK OF THE MONTH JUNE ’18
LARGE ART DECO VASE
Earthenware
Made for the 1935 Brussels International
Exposition by Villeroy & Boch Luxembourg
In 1935, Luxembourg took part in the Brus-
sels International Exposition with its largest
national pavilion since the 1900 exhibition in
Paris. This imposing structure, with an area of
2100m2, honoured the industrial, manufactu-
ring and artistic production of the Grand Du-
chy, which in 1921 had entered into an econo-
mic union with Belgium, host country of the
exhibition. The entrance hall of the Art Déco
style pavilion was decorated with a set of six
very large earthenware vases, each 1.20 me-
ters high. One of those is the one exhibited
at the MNHA. The special status given to the
vases, highlighting a bust of Grand Duchess
Charlotte and demonstrating the artistry of
Luxembourg ceramists, testifies to the impor-
tance given by the pavilion commissioner to
applied arts in the Grand Duchy. Come and
discover this beautiful, typically Art Déco ob-
ject in our permanent exhibition and visit the
special exhibition on Art Déco in Luxembourg
(28 April – 4 November 2018).

ARTS AND CRAFTS
Within the framework of our regular guided tours,
“Renc’Art” is a monthly invitation for a close-up view
of one masterpiece.
During these short encounters (about 20 minutes),
one work of art is analysed in depth, always leading to
surprising insights.
Focusing on a single work renews our gaze on the
national collections, and its reception.
These tours are offered eight times per month, on
Tuesdays at lunchtime (12.30 p.m.) and on Thurs-
days in the evening (7 p.m.), each week in one of the
four languages on offer French, German, English and
Portuguese.
These exciting and enriching visits are free of charge.
