The Italian Rococo painter Giuseppe Baldrighi was one of the leading portraitists of his time. After his studies in Florence, Baldrighi gained the favour of the Duke of Parma while on a journey. The Duke sent him to Paris in 1752, where he worked in the studio of the court painter François Boucher and was thus influenced by French courtly art. Baldrighi produced numerous portraits of the Ducal family. In 1756, he was elected a member of the Académie Royale. As a result of this nomination, the Duke of Parma appointed him court painter. Numerous portraits and preliminary studies in pastel are preserved from his time at court. Baldrighi was also a collector and owned paintings and prints by van Dyck and Fragonard, among others.
