Jeanne Clarisse Nast (1878-1955) was the first wife of publisher and businessman Condé Nast. They were married in 1902. By 1905, Condé and Clarisse Nast had two children, but in 1906, Clarisse decided to move to Paris alone to train to become a professional soprano. While that did not work out and she returned to New York two years later, Clarisse used her time in Paris to enjoy herself. While she was in France, Clarisse spent a lot of time with her sister Claire Coudert, Duchesse de Choiseul, who had an affair with Auguste Rodin for many years. It was Rodin who commissioned Edward Steichen to portray his lover’s sister.
