Marie Kemp Steichen, Mary Steichen and Edward Steichen

Print: probably 1910 - 1929H x L : 11 x 6.7 cm

We do not know for sure who took this photograph, but it is likely that Edward Steichen himself captured this moment with his mother and his eldest daughter with automatic release. The three generations of Steichens did not come together often–Edward’s parents lived in Illinois, Mary attended school in Manhattan, and Edward was travelling between Europe and the United States. This photograph must have been taken shortly before Steichen joined the US Army to serve in the First World War.
