- Dépôts d'objets en bronze du lit de la Moselle
- Hoards of bronze objects from the Moselle riverbed
- Collection:
- Protohistory
- Domain:
- Beliefs - Traditions
- Period | Style | Movement:
- Bronze Age
- Material | Technique:
- Bronze / copper alloy
- Geographical Reference:
- Represented place: Luxembourg | Moselle riverbed, Altwies, Heisdorf, Burmerange
- Location:
- MNHA | Main building | Floor -4
- Description:
-
Deposited bronze objects found while dredging the bed of the Moselle as well as at Altwies, Heisdorf and Burmerange consist mainly of weapons, ornaments, harness and chariot elements. There are axes, spearheads, daggers, sickles, hooks, knives, harness rings, bracelets, belt elements, pins ...
These assemblages reflect the obvious existence of an affluent social class distinguished by its mastery of horse and chariot, and are less frequent on Luxembourg territory compared to the neighbouring regions. They remain difficult to interpret. There are suggestions that these immersions in the riverbed of the Moselle might have had a religious or funerary meaning, but due to their fragmented state, the objects may also simply have been intended for recasting or disposal.
