Mårten Eskil Winge was a Swedish painter and illustrator. He first trained in the studio of a decorative painter and enrolled at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 1847. While still a student, he earned money by selling portraits. Winge was a representative of Swedish Symbolism and devoted himself thematically to Nordic sagas. In the late 1850s, he travelled to Düsseldorf, Paris and Rome. Shortly after his return to Sweden, Winge became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and received a professor's title. He opened his own painting school in his studio in 1865. Winge received numerous commissions for altarpieces in Swedish churches, which can still be seen in situ today. His paintings are mainly on display in Swedish museums.
