William Hogarth is considered one of the most important English painters and engravers of the 18th century. He is best known for his satirical series of engravings in which he denounced social and political evils and mocked fashions and customs. However, Hogarth also produced numerous portraits and in 1753, he published his art theories in his book The Analysis of Beauty. In 1757, he was appointed court painter by King George III. Hogarth's work influenced generations of cartoonists, painters and comic illustrators.
