RENC’ART - ARTWORK OF THE MONTH MARCH ’18
TOMB OF CLAUDE
DE NEUFCHÂTEL
1505
Luxembourg City,
Plateau du Saint-Esprit
Between 2001 and 2003, several archaeo-
logical projects were carried out on Plateau
du Saint-Esprit in Luxembourg City, at the
very site of the medieval monastery of the
Holy Spirit. The excavations of the monastery
church revealed elegant carved stone orna-
ments and, in the banked-up earth near the
northern triumphal arch in front of the chan-
cel, several carved fragments later found to
be quite exceptional: they were the lower part
of the round tomb of Claude de Neufchâtel,
Lord of Fay and Grancey, Lieutenant-General
of Luxembourg and Burgundy, acting gover-
nor under Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy.
We invite you to become acquainted with
one of the major archaeological discoveries of
Luxembourg’s recent past.

Within the framework of our regular guided tours,
“Renc’Art” is a monthly invitation for a close-up view
of one masterpiece.
During these short encounters (about 20 minutes),
one work of art is analysed in depth, always leading to
surprising insights.
Focusing on a single work renews our gaze on the
national collections, and its reception.
These tours are offered eight times per month, on
Tuesdays at lunchtime (12.30 p.m.) and on Thurs-
days in the evening (7 p.m.), each week in one of the
four languages on offer French, German, English and
Portuguese.
These exciting and enriching visits are free of charge.
