Michele Gordigiani attended a painting school in his home town of Florence from 1845 to 1848 and was admitted to the Accademia di Belle Arti in 1850. Early on, he specialised in portraits. In 1854, he showed two of his works at the exhibition of the Academy of Fine Arts. Gordigiani quickly established contacts with the upper middle classes and found numerous commissioners. In 1861, he exhibited a portrait of the Italian King Vittorio Emanuele II at the Esposizione Nazionale in Florence, for which he won a gold medal. Until the end of the 1880s, he was the official portrait painter of the royal family. Today, his numerous works feature mainly in museums in Italy.
