Beginning of existence

The Portrait Society | Anton von Werner

Anton von Werner was a German painter and illustrator. Because of his patriotic paintings and his rejection of all modern trends in art, he is considered the main representative of Wilhelminism. The name of this conservative art movement, oriented towards academic principles, refers to the reign of the German Emperor Wilhelm II (1888-1918). Von Werner began his training in 1859 at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and moved to Karlsruhe in 1862. At the academy in Karlsruhe, he discovered his interest in history painting. He pursued his studies in Paris in 1867 and travelled through Italy for the following two years. On his return to Germany, von Werner quickly became a sought-after artist, and, with his large-scale depictions of current events, a favourite of Emperor Wilhelm II. From 1874, von Werner was a member of the Academy of Arts, and, in 1909, he was appointed director of the National Gallery in Berlin. After the end of the Empire in 1918, von Werner's works glorifying the Emperor and his deeds were radically rejected by art critics. Nowadays, his paintings are appreciated for their documentary value.
