The Portrait Society | Vinzenz Anton Joseph Fanti

As the son of an Italian painter, Vinzenz Fanti, who was born in Vienna, had close contact with the Italian artistic community in Vienna from early on. He began his training at the Vienna Art Academy and then went to Bologna to work in the workshop of Vittorio Maria Bigari. Together with his teacher, he went to Rome and Turin, before returning to Austria in 1744. He assisted his father in frescoing a hall of the Melk monastery. In the following years, Fanti worked as a drawing teacher at the imperial court. After his father's death in 1760, he took over his father's post as director of the picture gallery in the Palais Liechtenstein. In 1767, Fanti published the first printed catalogue of the collection and he himself also produced the preparatory drawings for the catalogue’s engravings. Fanti bore the title of "Imperial Councillor" and was a member of the academies in Augsburg, Florence and Bologna. Despite his reputation, Fanti died in poverty. A year after his death, his widow asked in vain for a widow's pension from the imperial court. Fanti's self-portrait, the model for this portrait by Roland Schauls, has been in the Uffizi collection since 1770.
