Between the sacred and the profane - Masterpieces of the 17th century from the collections of Italian banks
06.02.2009 - 17.05.2009
The works presented in the exhibition, all from the collections of Italian banks, document one of the most fertile and stimulating periods in Italian painting: the period from the end of the sixteenth to the first half of the eighteenth century. Visitors will discover masterpieces by the leading painters of the period, including Francesco Albani, Ludovico Carraci, Bernardo Cavallino, Bartolomeo Cavarozzi, Luca Giordano, Carlo Maratta, Guido Reni and Alessandro Tiarini. It is, therefore, a grandiose art whose various aspects the exhibition seeks to document by contrasting sacred and secular subjects, just as collectors of the past saw in this diversity the perfect balance of the culture of their time, halfway between ancient wisdom and devotional practices.
