Toulouse-Lautrec - The lithographs
Toulouse-Lautrec - The lithographs
17.06.2005 - 21.08.2005
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) made 351 lithographs between 1891 and 1901. He produced 351 colour lithographs, 28 of which were posters that established his reputation very early on. These colour lithographs, inspired by Japanese prints, with their strong contrasts and combination of type and drawing, were the stylistic starting point for modern poster art.
The renowned collection of the Berlin artist Otto Gerstenberg, who collected all these exceptional works before the First World War, includes not only signed works but also special prints, proofs and test prints. It is now owned by the Scharf family, descendants of the collector, who have entrusted their treasure trove to the Hypo-Kulturstiftung. It is through this cultural foundation, set up by the HVB banking group, that this unique exhibition is being presented in Luxembourg. Professor Götz Adriani, director of the Kunsthalle in Tübingen, is responsible for presenting the painter's lithographs.
