Gold from the Moselle - The Roman treasure of Machtum, an imperial gift

Gold from the Moselle - The Roman treasure of Machtum, an imperial gift

10.10.2008 - 18.01.2009

In April 1958, dredging work in the Moselle between Ahn and Machtum led to the discovery of a large number of gold coins. The news spread quickly and a gold rush ensued. Many coins were immediately sold, notably at auctions in Amsterdam and Switzerland, and found their way to Boston. Others still belong to private individuals who were once involved in the discovery.  On the fiftieth anniversary of its discovery, and after extensive research, this unique treasure has finally been reconstructed. Comparison with other treasures of the period on display in the exhibition helps to place it in the context of the largitio, the imperial gift.
